John Sosso
Public servant John Sosso served in the Queensland departments of Consumer Affairs, Justice and Emergency Services and was Deputy Director General in the Premier’s Department until removed in 1998 by the incoming Beattie government. Biography
From the early 1980s through to 1998, public servant John Sosso served in the Queensland departments of Consumer Affairs, Justice and Emergency Services, and as Deputy Director General in the Premier’s Department.
John Sosso was born in Brisbane in 1957. He was educated at Rochedale State School and MacGregor State High School. He completed a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws at the University of Queensland before joining the Queensland Public Service in 1984.
During his time in the public service, Sosso directed the preparation of legislation on a number of key issues such as trade measurements, fair trading law enforcement and censorship. He was involved in the workings of the Fitzgerald Inquiry during the Ahern era as well as the removal of Supreme Court Judge Angelo Vasta in 1989 for corruption.
In 1996 he facilitated a review with Kevin Martin of the Public Service Management and Employment Act 1988, leading to its subsequent amendment in August 1996. He was prominent in the (failed) push for a more efficient light rail service for Queensland, as well as other public transport issues, throughout the Borbidge years. Sosso was a contemporary of the ‘Dad’s Army’ and ‘Hit List’ controversies before being removed from his Premier’s Department position by the Beattie Government in 1998. Sosso served as an Internal Ombudsman for the Civil Aviation Safety Authority from 2000, and Deputy President of the National Native Title Tribunal in Brisbane since 2007.
